The Onion is usually a pretty reliable source for hilarious interpretations of current events. Today’s video on Google’s “new project” is no exception: the report explains that the employees at the Googleplex have launched voice advertisements. Basically, if you’re on the phone with a friend and you say something like “Want to go get a burger for dinner?”, an ad might play in the background suggesting that you “try Five Guys for the best, cheapest burgers in town”. You might also see a browser on your smart phone giving you directions to the nearest location.
I certainly hope software companies don’t take this video seriously. We’d be entering into a real Big Brother world if advertising takes a turn in this direction.
