Why You Won’t Be Using Microsoft Office in the Near Future

Google published a blog yesterday asking current Office users to “upgrade” to Google Docs. Google even created one of those neat comparison charts that made it look like that Luke Wilson AT&T commercial except Office’s name is different.

Starts with the letter O?

While I agree that Google Docs is a great alternative for businesses (especially startups and other small businesses that really can’t afford to buy the newest Microsoft Office every three years), it does leave a lot to be desired in the professional scope. Google Docs doesn’t have as many formatting options and other features as Office does, but it does make collaborating much easier. It’s even free if you have fewer than 50 users! You could also make the argument that even though Internet access is practically a given in most situations, you do need to be online to use Google Docs.

Though there are some major problems with making Google Docs a complete replacement for Microsoft Office, Google seems to be heading in the right direction. They plan to add real-time collaboration within Office 2003 and 2007 and you can edit Office files and spit them out in the same format. Also, they’ve made huge strides in their formatting options and functionality in general, but I feel Google Docs still lacks the oomph to overtake such a behemoth of a rival. What do you think? Does Google Docs even have a chance or will it go the way of OpenOffice?

“Never bet against the web” is the new mantra; it was “never bet against the desktop”, for 25+ years now.
