I am an avid reader of Seth Godin’s Blog and he says a lot of great things but once in a while he makes a post that really makes you think. In the spirit of spreading the ideavirus, his post is below:
We’re the same, we’re the same, we’re…
Take a look at just about any industry with many competitors–colleges, hotels, sedans, accounting firms (especially accounting firms)…
The websites bend over backwards to be just like all the others. You can’t identify one hotel website from another if you delete the name of the hotel (unless there’s a beach or a snow-capped mountain in the background).
Sometimes, we try so hard to fit in we give consumers no choice but to seek out the cheapest. After all, if everything is the same, why not buy what’s cheap and close?
How about a site that says, “Here’s why we’re different.” And means it.
(Easy to read this and nod your head, but… what’s your resume look like?)
I fully enjoyed the phrase at the end and it’s so true. Most resume’s I look at are the same and don’t pop out at me. If you want to get hired, make a resume that is at least memorable. My marketing professor told me a story about his one colleague that instead of sending a resume, would send a life size cardboard cut out of himself with reasons why he should be hired in a speech bubble. Guess what? He got the job.
Don’t be scared to be different and I’ve carried (or at least tried) the same thinking here at phone halo. We want to be different from all the gadgets out there and apps through our complete integration. We focus on loss prevention rather than finding. Our apps are designed to look and behave unique. And I’m positive that where ever you may go, someone will comment on your phone halo device.
Be different. Don’t replicate. Be remarkable.
